Senior diagnostics executive specialized in commercial growth, strategy and strategic partnerships. Founder and Principal Research Author of Persodia Research.
Miguel Oliveira is an international diagnostics executive whose career has been built across commercial leadership, business strategy and strategic partnerships.
He has worked across global diagnostics organisations including Abbott, Roche Diagnostics, Boehringer Mannheim and Leica Biosystems / Danaher, with responsibilities spanning commercial growth, P&L leadership, international market development, channel strategy, portfolio commercialisation and partnership development.
His work has consistently focused on translating strategy into execution across markets with different healthcare systems, commercial structures, levels of infrastructure and operating conditions.
He founded Persodia Research to examine the structural forces shaping the IVD industry and its evolution towards health intelligence.
Commercial leadership, strategy and partnerships
Miguel’s professional career is fundamentally commercial.
He has led diagnostics businesses, portfolios and commercial organisations operating across direct and distributor-led markets. His responsibilities have included revenue growth, P&L management, market development, organisational design, partner governance, commercial negotiations and performance management.
Alongside direct commercial leadership, strategy and strategic partnerships have become increasingly important parts of his work.
At Abbott, he led channel strategy and commercial architecture across a large and diverse network of diagnostics partners in EMEA. This included partner selection and development, performance frameworks, commercial governance, contract structures, incentives, business planning and the management of complex relationships across multiple healthcare systems.
He subsequently led strategic partnership initiatives involving ecosystem development, partner scouting, business-case construction, senior management engagement and the integration of external capabilities into broader diagnostic solutions.
This experience reinforced a recurring principle: partnerships create value only when strategic intent, commercial incentives, governance and operational realities are aligned.
International diagnostics experience
Miguel’s career has covered international, regional and country-level responsibilities across Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, Africa and other global distributor markets.
At Roche Diagnostics, he held roles across product management, laboratory consulting, workflow solutions, global marketing, business-unit leadership and business development.
As Business Unit Director in Mexico, he held full P&L responsibility for a diagnostics organisation of approximately 90 people, covering sales, service and support across direct and distributor channels.
In Germany, he contributed to the global positioning and commercialisation of core laboratory systems, working with research and development teams, regional organisations and country affiliates.
His earlier work in Portugal included the development of laboratory consulting, automation, information technology and workflow-optimisation services, as well as commercial responsibility across clinical chemistry, immunodiagnostics, molecular diagnostics and point-of-care testing.
At Roche Tissue Diagnostics, he supported the introduction and development of pathology solutions following the acquisition of Ventana Medical Systems and worked with pharmaceutical colleagues to connect diagnostic testing with oncology treatment pathways.
At Leica Biosystems / Danaher, he led commercial development across international distributor markets and helped establish direct commercial operations in Portugal and Spain. His responsibilities covered pathology, histology, advanced staining, microscopy and digital imaging solutions.
Across these roles, he has operated at the intersection of product capability, customer workflow, commercial structure and market adoption.
From growth to durable growth
A recurring theme in Miguel’s work is the difference between generating growth and sustaining it.
Commercial expansion frequently creates its own complexity. Organisations accumulate products, markets, channels, technologies, systems and external partners. Approaches that work in one market may not transfer cleanly to another. Models that support one phase of growth may become constraints during the next.
His work has therefore increasingly focused on the conditions that make growth durable:
- strategic prioritisation and trade-offs;
- commercial architecture and governance;
- partner incentives and accountability;
- adaptation across markets;
- integration of products, services and external capabilities;
- alignment between strategy and operational execution.
This perspective is grounded in responsibility for operating businesses and delivering results under real commercial and organisational constraints.
Persodia Research
Miguel founded Persodia Research in 2026 as an independent analytical programme examining the structural evolution of the in-vitro diagnostics industry.
Persodia studies how regulation, evidence, economics, market structure, commercial models, technology, partnerships and healthcare infrastructure shape the development and adoption of diagnostic systems.
Its central interest is not technology in isolation, but the conditions under which diagnostic capability becomes clinically usable, commercially sustainable and structurally integrated into healthcare.
Persodia’s work draws on four connected sources:
- professional experience across diagnostics businesses and markets;
- structured analysis of the IVD industry;
- public regulatory, scientific and economic evidence;
- field observation at relevant diagnostics, healthcare and technology forums.
Conference observations are used to test and refine conclusions developed through the underlying research. They are not treated as substitutes for that research.
Research and publications
Miguel is the author of:
Inside the Clinical Diagnostics Industry: Constraints Shaping Strategy — Towards Health Intelligence
The book examines how the diagnostics industry developed from an analytical-product sector into a structural component of modern healthcare, while remaining constrained by regulatory systems, evidence requirements, market structures, workflow realities and the distribution of decision-making power.
He is also the author of the Persodia IVD Industry Monograph series, which examines specific structural questions affecting the industry.
Current and continuing areas of research include:
- the contribution of diagnostics to health-intelligence systems;
- evidence, authority and diagnostic adoption;
- European IVD competitiveness;
- the laboratory platform as an operating asset;
- IVD company and product structures;
- commercial models and value creation across the diagnostics industry;
- strategic partnerships and ecosystem development.
Persodia also publishes shorter Insights and field Observations that connect these structural themes with current industry developments.
Professional perspective
Miguel combines scientific and commercial formation.
He studied Chemical Engineering at the Universidade de Coimbra and completed an MBA in Business and Marketing at Universidade Católica Portuguesa.
His professional development has also included Roche’s HORIZONS leadership programme at London Business School and training in the Danaher Business System.
He has worked across clinical chemistry, immunoassay, molecular diagnostics, laboratory automation, workflow and information systems, pathology, immunohistochemistry, point-of-care testing and analytical technologies.
This breadth supports a systems-level view of the diagnostics industry while retaining a practical focus on commercialisation, execution and partnership development.
Independent status
Persodia Research is an independent analytical programme.
Its research and publications reflect the author’s analysis and professional judgement. They do not represent the positions of Miguel’s former employers or other organisations with which he has worked.
